At the Gate of Heaven
2000 / Oil on linen / 50 x 70 cm
This work is inspired by Van de Graaf’s trip to Rome in 1999 and his interest in cities, architecture and shapes. In this work you see his early search in finding a balance between abstraction and figuration. He has never been interested in copying a photograph, but more what the images are telling him and how he can transmit that on the canvas.
